Drunk Driving Mom Throws Son Over Fence to Outrun Police

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A South Carolina woman was banned from driving and ordered to wear an alcohol and drug monitor after she crashed her car while drunk and then tried to throw her four-year-old son over a fence while fleeing the scene, WHNS-TV reported Friday.

At about 10:00pm Wednesday, two witnesses saw a 2009 white Lexus driving erratically, WHNS reported, citing the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office and an incident report. They then watched the car crash into a median barrier on the interstate highway near Spartanburg, roughly 95 miles northwest of Columbia.

The driver, Nikki Settle, then got out of the car with her son in her arms, climbed the barrier and crossed the highway in an attempt to escape, witnesses told police.

Settle, 25, then tried to throw the boy over a 10-foot-tall fence before the witnesses were able to coax her back to the scene of the accident.

The child, who was not hurt, was turned over to his grandmother, WHNS reported.

Among the charges brought against Settle were counts of child endangerment, driving with a suspended license and driving under the influence, WHNS reported. She posted bail and was released Friday, although she was banned from driving and ordered to wear an alcohol and drug monitor.
