NEW YORK -- A Brooklyn police officer was killed Sunday when he was pushed down a flight of stairs by an emotionally-disturbed person.
Police Officer Alain Schaberger, 42, was rushed to Lutheran Hospital -- where he died -- after fracturing his neck in a 9-foot fall, according to the New York Daily News.
"He was very well respected," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly told the Daily News. "It's a terrible tragedy."
Schaberger was tossed down the stairs when he went to handcuff George Villaneuva on the front step of his Boerum Hill home, sources said.
He was declared dead at 6:59 a.m. local time at Lutheran Hospital, the sources added.
Villaneuva had earlier threatened to kill his girlfriend at her home in Boerum Hill, according to Kelly, and she had an order of protection against him.
As Villaneuva was led out of the brownstone on St. Mark's Place, his girlfriend identified him coming out of a police car, prompting police to arrest him, according to the Daily News. It was then that Villaneuva shoved Schaberger over a 21-inch railing.
Villaneuva was so violent after shoving Schaberger that police had to Taser him twice, with officers on the scene citing that he tried to smash out a police car window.
Schaberger has been described by Kelly as a U.S. Navy veteran, "quiet and hardworking," according to the Daily News.
Charges are pending against Villaneuva, who Kelly says has 28 prior arrests.
