Beheading suspect: Wife had my unconditional love

BUFFALO, N.Y. – A man accused of beheading his wife after she demanded a divorce told a jury in upstate New York that he had given her "unconditional love" during their marriage.

Muzzammil Hassan (moo-ZAHM'-mel HAH'-sahn) spent hours Friday testifying about his relationship with his wife, Aasiya (AH'-see-ya).

He is acting as his own lawyer in his murder trial. He is arguing that he killed his wife in self-defense because she was abusive.

The Buffalo News reports that on the witness stand, Hassan has portrayed himself as a patient spouse who wished to heal a woman who was needy and volatile.

But he also described terrible arguments.

He said he once prevented his wife from visiting her family in Pakistan by throwing his children's passports over Niagara Falls.

Hassan's testimony began Thursday and is scheduled to resume Monday.
